Why Browsers Still Matter in the Age of AI
From shaping Opera's browsers for nearly a decade to leading product marketing for Opera One and Opera Neon, this conversation explores the future of browsing, the role of AI, and why great products begin with understanding people.
Q: To start, can you tell us a bit about your role at Opera and what a typical day looks like for you?
A: I'm currently Senior Product Marketing Director for Opera One and Opera Neon, but my journey with Opera started more than 12 years ago. I joined as a designer and animator before moving into product management, where I spent nearly a decade helping shape Opera's flagship browser experience.
Today, my marketing leadership role sits at the intersection of product, users, storytelling and growth. Working with talented cross-functional teams, I turn product strategy into market narratives that help people understand, care about, and choose our browser.
I don't really have typical days, but I do have typical weeks. Opera is an incredibly cross-functional environment, and I often compare it to tending a garden. At the beginning of the week, we assess what's growing, what's working, and what needs attention. The middle of the week is usually focused on collaboration, creativity, and moving ideas forward. By Friday, we're either celebrating progress or solving last-minute challenges.
Throughout the week, I'm working closely with other marketing leaders, product managers, engineers, designers, communications teams, and many other stakeholders. That's what makes the role so dynamic and rewarding.
Q: The browser market is incredibly competitive, yet Opera continues to position Opera One as a more personal and innovative browsing experience. What do you think makes Opera One stand out today?
A: Opera One is the heart of our browser portfolio. Opera has been part of the web almost since the beginning, and throughout that history we've followed the same principle: challenge assumptions and keep asking what is genuinely useful for people.
What makes Opera One different isn't any single feature. Many browser features eventually become industry standards. What matters is how those features work together as a cohesive experience.
We're incredibly deliberate about that. Internally, we're often jokingly described as browser nerds because we care deeply about how every element connects and contributes to the overall experience.
People don't use browsers for browsers. They use them to learn, create, work, communicate, and move ideas forward. There's always a moment when an idea becomes action, and Opera One is designed for that transition. For people who care about the tools they use every day, that's where Opera stands out.
Q: Browsers are evolving far beyond simply displaying webpages. How do you see the relationship between AI and browsing changing over the next few years?
A: The shift we're seeing is larger than simply adding AI to the browser.
Browsers stopped being simple windows to the web a long time ago. They evolved through web applications, extensions, cloud services, collaboration tools, and countless other capabilities. What AI is changing now is the interaction layer.
For some users, AI is becoming a command center that helps orchestrate multiple tools and services from a single point of interaction. For others, the browser interface itself will remain essential.
More than ever, people will always need content, information, services, and connections with other people. Browsers remain the experience layer that brings all of those things together.
The real question is how people will interact with the web in an increasingly agentic environment. How much will be controlled directly? How much will be delegated? How visible should those interactions be? Those are the questions that will shape the future of browsing.
Q: At the same time, users still care deeply about speed and performance. Opera One recently introduced a faster native ad blocker. Why do those fundamentals remain so important in the AI era?
A: Because people don't experience technology in isolation.
When someone opens a browser, they're rarely focused on the browser itself. They're focused on everything else happening in their lives. They might be solving a problem, planning a trip, studying, working, managing family responsibilities, or pursuing a personal project.
The last thing they need is technology getting in the way.
That's why speed, reliability, and performance remain fundamental. People don't use browsers in ideal laboratory conditions. They use them in real life, often while juggling multiple priorities and distractions.
A great browser should feel almost invisible. It should help people move seamlessly from one task to another without friction. That's why features like our ad blocker, VPN, Tab Islands, and cross-device experiences matter so much. They aren't just features. They're part of helping people stay focused on what matters to them.
Q: A lot of AI tools still require users to constantly decide which model, workflow, or assistant to use. Opera Neon seems to reduce that friction by making the browser itself more intelligent about intent. Is the goal ultimately to make AI feel invisible to the user?
A: Not necessarily. Opera Neon is our exploration of what an agentic browser can become. It's designed for people who are already deeply engaged with AI and want to push those capabilities further.
Many advanced users don't want AI to disappear. They want more visibility, more control, and more ways to orchestrate different tools and models. For them, AI is becoming part of their operating system for thinking, creating, researching, and getting work done.
At the same time, we serve many different audiences across Opera's browsers. For some users, AI works best when it's visible and interactive. For others, it's most valuable when it quietly removes friction and helps them achieve a goal faster.
The important thing is not whether AI is visible or invisible. It's whether users understand what's happening and remain in control. AI is not simply a faster technology. It makes decisions, generates content, and influences outcomes. That makes transparency, consent, and choice incredibly important.
There isn't one universal AI experience, and that's exactly why we're exploring different approaches across different products.
Q: Opera often launches features that feel both experimental and user-driven. How closely do the product, marketing, and community teams collaborate when shaping and launching new ideas?
A: Collaboration isn't something we add to the process. It's the process.
Browsers are complex products. They're challenging to build, design, explain, and evolve. None of that works without people working closely together.
One of the things I love about Opera is that collaboration is deeply embedded in the culture. Product teams, engineers, designers, marketers, researchers, communicators, and community teams all contribute to shaping the experience.
When you're working on a product with nearly 30 years of history, you're also contributing to a much larger story. For that story to remain authentic, the product, the experience, and the narrative all need to be aligned. That only happens when people collaborate openly and consistently.
Q: Finally, if you had to describe the future of browsing in three words, what would they be and why?
A: Visibility. Objects. Choice.
Visibility reflects a challenge that comes with AI. As systems become better at filtering and summarizing information, there's a risk of losing some of what makes the web special: discovery, exploration, and the unexpected moments that lead you somewhere you weren't planning to go. I hope the future of browsing preserves that sense of openness.
Objects capture how the web is evolving. It's becoming less about individual pages and more about the content, ideas, and information people collect along the way. The browser increasingly becomes a place where those pieces can be organized, connected, and transformed into something meaningful.
Choice may be the most important of the three. As technology becomes more intelligent, user control becomes more valuable. Browsers sit between people, the web, and AI. They remain one of the few places where users can decide what they see, what they keep, and how they interact with technology.
The future of browsing will undoubtedly be more intelligent and more connected. But its most important role will remain the same: helping people navigate the web on their own terms.
